Jugband Blues, by Syd Barrett

“And what exactly is a dream?
And what exactly is a joke?”

I don't have much to write about this song. Some lines from a draft for a poem, some drunken or high, high verses. It's technically a Pink Floyd song, of course, the last one on “A Saucerful of Secrets” (1968). Along with the single “Apples and Oranges,” it's a brilliant sample of what Syd Barrett could do when he chose to participate, with the Abbey Road studios (and the world of music) at his command. Can we think of a better video among the musical dross that passes for art today? Indirectly, Barrett echoes Keats: “Truth is beauty...”
